The 15th century legend says that the Black Madonna was painted by St. Luke, the Evangelist, on a tabletop at St. Mary’s house. It is believed to share miraculous powers to those who visit her.
City of Wadowice, home town of Karol Wojtyla, the future Pope John Paul II, is located 50 km (31 miles) from Krakow.
Family House of John Paul II, now transformed into a museum, is situated on the edge of the Main Square in Wadowice. Another recognizable building in Wadowice is the Basillica of the Offering of the Blessed virgin Mary – place where Karol Wojtyla was baptized and confirmed. Inside the Basillica you will see a baptism certificate and baptism bowl.
